MIKE 21/3 – Coastal sediment transport and morphology
INVESTMENT
Fee: No charge*
Time commitment: self-study of six modules including lectures and hands-on exercises, approximately four hours.
In this online self-paced course, we will walk you through the vast subject of coastal sediment transport in the context of coastal processes and coastal engineering. This course will give you a peek into the field of coastal processes and sediment transport. If you wish to learn more about specific aspects such as modelling, we welcome you to explore our more in-depth courses as well as our scientific publications.
We will be presenting the most frequently used numerical model types that help quantify the coastal phenomena in real-world projects. This takes place over two lectures that will provide you with a background of numerical modelling and its different applications
About coastal engineering
Coastal engineering is a field where three skills are needed: 1) A basic understanding of the processes, 2) (numerical) modelling skills and 3) a thorough understanding of the context of the given project (coastal protection, morphological impact from structures, climate change, etc.).
Coastal environments are transient, continuously reshaped by the natural processes of the waves, tides, surges, erosion and deposition.
IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR ME?
This course is ideal for:
- Students who want to look into what coastal engineering is about
- Young professionals who need a basic background as a researcher or a consultant coastal engineer
- Experienced engineers who need to brush up their basic knowledge and be updated of the latest models
- Professionals from other engineering branches such as urban, hydrology or marine engineering
WHAT ARE MY EXPECTED OUTCOMES?
This course gives an overview of coastal engineering as a discipline. You will be introduced to the very basic concepts, terminologies, theories and models, including the coastal profile, sediments, wave, current and sediment transport mechanisms. There will be examples of different types of mitigation measures, and the effects of climate change and sea level rise will also be shared. There will be no hands-on model exercises. The course should be considered as an introduction to the field of coastal processes and engineering – a starting point for ‘next level’ progression, for example into modelling, data analyses and other specific topics.
LEARNING METHODOLOGY
The course includes videos, quizzes and small exercises that will support the lecture. It will take you around four hours to complete the course at a time that fits your needs and requirements – in the comfort of your own office, home or any location convenient for you.
MODULE DETAILS
Module 1 - An overview of the basic wave and current phenomena in the surf zone
Module 2 - An overview of the fundamentals of coastal sediment transport
Module 3 - An overview of the types of coastal erosion and possible mitigation measures
Module 4 - The first introduction to numerical models and how these can support the coastal engineer
Module 5 - Focus on models dedicated to longshore transport and shoreline evolution
Module 6 – Discussion of the different mechanisms for climate-related changes in the coastal dynamics order, i.e how to couple the knowledge and modelling capabilities for estimating the impact of climate change on the coast
PRESENTER
Dr. NILS DRØNEN, DHI DENMARK
PhD, Technical University of Denmark
Dr. Nils Drønen, Chief Engineer at DHI, is an engineering and MIKE modelling specialist with 20 years of experience in erosion, flooding, coastal protection and climate adaption of coastal areas. Currently, Dr. Drønen focuses on the interaction between multiple sources of flooding (sea level rise, tides, storm surges, river runoff and cloudbursts) and estimation of damage losses and mitigation against flooding in urban and inland areas near the coast.
